Michaux’s Saxifrage

By Jason

Turns out that these ‘little white flowers‘ have a proper name: Michaux’s Saxifrage.

We learn something new most every time we attend the Asheville City Market. Thanks, Steve, for cluing us in on the real name.

This particualr saxifrage is named after its ‘discoverer’ Andre Michaux who did a little botany work for ol’ Louis XVI of France.  According to this site the plant likes it high and moist growing primarily on seepage slopes and above 4500′. .. which explains why we found it high in the Santeetlah Creek watershed on a wet forest service road cut.
