Double-crested Cormorant

(Phalacrocorax auritus)

washed ashore on night # one at Toleak Point. I grabbed the 35mm camera; Jason grabbed the large format with the macro lens- his image here steals the show! Our dear friend holds a large red fish in his mouth. Appears he died whilst eating.

Kayaker at Toleak Point

September 10, 2008 by honourmann

wow, this is actually my first post on this blog. Jason has been the author!

I am posting a few of his images from our Washington trip-

we had backpacked 7 miles to Toleak Point, had settled into our camp and was just sort of playing around with the large format camera.  A plan to document the sunset got distracted while noticing a kayaker coming towards us through the Sea Stacks. Jason captured this image just before the kayaker came ashore. As we were walking to get water later I stopped to talk with the kayaker named Paul. He had a custom boat made of fiber glass skin- really nice. He was lucky to have such calm and beautiful weather coming and leaving Toleak- we had a rainy day backpacking out and wished we had the weather from days before.

Back to The Market tomorrow…

August 8, 2008 by Jason

So much to catch up on here but not enough time now… I’ll leave the catch up material for another day.

Meanwhile, come see us tomorrow at The City Market. Mention the blog and get a free fridge magnet!

Our fresh magnet sets this time around will include some of the crabapple pictures below… we found a couple of ripe trees in the neighborhood and decided to collect what we could off the ground to add to a batch of mead. Insects beat us to about half of what we brought home but the other half should provide some nice balance for the honey wine.

The Market Project progresses…

July 11, 2008 by Jason

Honour has just secured a  spot at the Kress Emporium. It’s a small wall to begin with and we’re excited about the possibilities.

Artwork should be up immediately after our trip to ONP, the first week in August. Stop by, check it out, and pick up something nice for your home.

At the Asheville City Market tomorrow and hope to see ya there.

Michaux’s Saxifrage

July 2, 2008 by Jason

Turns out that these ‘little white flowers‘ have a proper name: Michaux’s Saxifrage.

We learn something new most every time we attend the Asheville City Market. Thanks, Steve, for cluing us in on the real name.

This particualr saxifrage is named after its ‘discoverer’ Andre Michaux who did a little botany work for ol’ Louis XVI of France.  According to this site the plant likes it high and moist growing primarily on seepage slopes and above 4500′. .. which explains why we found it high in the Santeetlah Creek watershed on a wet forest service road cut.

Dirty garlic, and the progession of things

June 29, 2008 by Jason

Our “fresh magnet set” at the Asheville City Market today was garlic. All of the planted cloves turned to bulbs and are now curing in the shed… we’ve eaten a couple, and they’re fantastic.

When I was rooting around Honour’s computer to find the garlic images, I ran across some of the little rooster pics. It’s the same bird as in the picture in the post linked to above. The recipe came together pretty well.

a fowl situation

Seems that folks are organizing to lobby for some clucking change.

One of the ladies involved stopped by our Market booth a couple of Saturdays ago and talked chicken for a few minutes after noticing one of our images.

Viva la City Market

June 15, 2008 by Jason

This past Saturday was only our second time vending at the City Market… wedding photography has kept Honour super busy the past couple of months.  When we were there in April we sold enough refrigerator magnets to pretty much pay for the booth space.

This time around we sold one set of magnets to our friends Cindy, Blake, and Hatty. We also let a gentleman by the name of Chris take home a framed print that Honour shot from her dad’s boat in the ACE basin, down low country way. The 11 x 14 image was custom printed on fiber-based archival paper; matted and framed by us. This was really good for the ‘Market Project’ and we hope it continues. It just feels good to know that someone will enjoy our work in their home.

Here’s a digital scan of the negative:

Our booth was in a great location between the good folks of Hickory Nut Gap Farm and the new ‘Shop with a Chef’ monthly Market event (a wonderful idea, by the way).

We’ll be there again this Saturday.
